Free Time - The Beaches
of Yelapa

From
the Retreat Center, the main beach in Yelapa is only a 5-10
minute walk down river. On the way you will pass by the
alternative medicine clinic, run by a Harvard trained doctor
who is investigating non-traditional healing modalities.
Once at the beach you can relax
in a lawn chair, visit with locals, eat in one of the many
beach restaurants, swim, sun bathe, or for the more adventurous,
take out a sea kayak, go para-sailing, or para-gliding.
|
Most
participants choose to gather at the north end of the beach which
offers amenities like bathrooms, shady tables, and lawn chairs.
At any restaurant you can get fresh chips, guacamole, salsa, and
drinks, or a full meal including fresh fish caught that morning
by one of the many village fishermen. In
the evenings there is usually live entertainment, often of a
high caliber. Yelapa is a favorite get-away for musicians, and
there is usually a professional blues singer, or folk band in
town on any given day or month!
Yelapa
has 3 beaches. The smallest of them is Charles' favorite and
is almost always deserted. It also features the best snorkeling
in the village. From the retreat center this beach is about
a 20 minute walk through the village.
|
Posota
is a small village further down the coast, accessible only by
boat. It has some of the best snorkeling in banderas bay, and
also has a beach that has larger waves, great for body surfing
in. |
Walking
back to Los Naranjos, one of the village teenagers
shows of his catch of the day. At one time, fishing
was the primary industry of Yelapa. Although it still
maintains a strong fishing tradition, most of the
money coming into Yelapa is brought by visitors who
rent palapas, and eat at the village restaurants.
For scuba enthusiasts,
special arrangements can be made in advance for a
private or small group excursion. Bandaras Bay is
a breeding ground for humpback whales, wright wales,
grey whales, dolphins and manta rays.
