The Waterfalls of Yelapa

At left, Los Naranjos Retreat Center has its own, spring fed waterfall, coming down from the mountains. The pool into which it falls is about 7 feet deep and great for swimming or just hanging out. Behind the photographer the water cascades another 30 feet into the valley where the retreat center is located.

This private waterfall and pool is for the exclusive use of our retreat participants.

The village waterfall is easy to find. Ask any of the locals and they are happy to point the way. Once on the path you follow upstream, past the rose-wood factory, through the narrow valley, and past papaya, lime and other tropical fruit trees growing wild.

Above, Karen, Kevin, Jim and Tierno pause to admire the scenery, half way to the waterfall. Steve is seen at left, perched high above the pool at the base of the falls. A steady cold and wet wind from evaporation provides a natural air conditioner for visitors.

Roni and Michele stake out a table next to the falls and are still there when the rest of the group leaves.

Meanwhile (below left) Ellen and Kevin set out to cross to the other side, below the falls in order to gain access to the pool at the base of the waterfall!

Here there is a steady wind caused by the evaporation, and the temperature drops 15-20 degrees. The pool is deep enough to swim in, the water is refreshingly cool, and the waterfall provides free massages and never gets tired.

The water in the pool, seen behind Ellen (at right) is cold, but participants often take the plunge.

Standing beneath the 70 foot falls provides a natural massage.

For the more adventurous, a 20 minute hike on jungle trails leads up above the village waterfall.

Seen below, three participants from the November 2002 retreat swim in their very own private little paradise. Laying in the waterr, resting on the natural lip of the waterfall they are afforded a spectacular view to the left of the bay, and the mountains on either side. This is Charles favorite place in Yelapa.
