Schedule - Snorkeling
Trip
During
the retreat we schedule an optional boat trip that includes
snorkeling, and a wonderful lunch. Depending upon how
rough the ocean is we sometimes cross Banderas
Bay to the Marrietas Islands and other times we head
down the coast to the remote village of Posota.
Any time you venture out
into Banderas Bay, you are likely to see manta rays, dolphins
or whales. We hire a private boat for these excursions
so that we can stop and watch if we do see a pod of whales.
Both
trips include swimming, snorkeling, great beaches, and
a fantastic lunch.
|
| On
the Marrietas Islands trip we snorkel at the volcanic reefs,
and watch the blue footed booby nesting and then swim. Meanwhile,
our guides fish for lunch and prepare a meal on the beach for
us.
The water is warm and clear, and the tropical
fish are a riot of colors, shapes, and sizes. one of the
nicest aspects of Banderas Bay is that it is a nursing ground
for Humpback whales and dolphins, and the dolphins patrol
the two deep water channels connecting the bay to the ocean,
to keep sharks out. The entire bay is almost shark free!
After a few hours of snorkeling, participants
relax on one of the beautiful beaches.
|
On
the Posota trip we visit a small fishing village of about
70 people that does not have electricity or any roads.
Their only connection to the rest of Mexico is a daily water
taxi.
The villagers have a small restaurant and prepare a 4 course
meal of sea food that is exceptionally good.
The three beaches at Posota allow participants as much seclusion
as they desire. The beach shown on the right is great for
snorkeling. In addition to a host of colorful fish including
schools, occassionally snorkelers are able to get close to
manta rays that play in these waters.
|
|
The
beach shown at left is famous for its larger waves. Those participants
who are little more adventurous can enjoy body surfing and generally
getting tossed around by powerful waves.
|
|
The
main beach at Posota is close to the village and many participants
love the chance to practice their spanish. At left two participants
help some of the local children with their homework.
Posota offers a chance to see a
very traditional indian culture, unspoiled by electricity and
all that it brings with it.
